What Is HSRP and Why Do You Need to Apply?

High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are tamper-proof number plates mandated by the Government of India for all vehicles registered before April 2019. These plates feature a chromium-based hologram, a laser-etched PIN, and a hot-stamped IND inscription to prevent forgery and theft. If your vehicle doesn't yet have an HSRP, you are legally required to apply for one.

What You Need Before You Begin

Before starting the online application process, keep the following documents and details handy:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) – original or a clear digital copy
  • Engine and Chassis Number – found on your RC book
  • Registered mobile number – for OTP verification
  • Vehicle class – two-wheeler, four-wheeler, etc.
  • Fuel type – petrol, diesel, CNG, or electric
  • Email address – for booking confirmation

Step-by-Step: Applying for HSRP Online

  1. Visit the correct state portal. Each state has its own authorised HSRP vendor website. Common portals include bookmyhsrp.com (used by many states), siam.in for certain OEMs, or state transport department websites. Always use only government-authorised links.
  2. Select your vehicle category. Choose whether you own a two-wheeler or four-wheeler, then select your vehicle's fuel type and registration state.
  3. Enter vehicle details. Input your registration number, engine number, and chassis number exactly as they appear on your RC. Any mismatch will cause the application to fail.
  4. Choose a fitment centre. You'll be shown a list of authorised dealers or fitment centres near your PIN code. Select a convenient location and pick an available appointment slot.
  5. Select colour-coded fuel sticker (if applicable). Vehicles in many states also require a colour-coded sticker on the windshield indicating fuel type. This is often bundled with the HSRP order.
  6. Review and pay online. The total fee varies by vehicle type and state. Pay securely via UPI, net banking, credit/debit card, or wallets. You'll receive a booking confirmation via SMS and email.
  7. Visit the fitment centre on your appointment date. Carry your RC and the confirmation SMS/email. The fitment centre will install the plates on the spot — it usually takes under 30 minutes.

Can You Apply Offline?

Yes. If you are unable to apply online, you can visit an authorised HSRP dealer directly. Carry your RC book and a photo ID. The dealer will enter your details into the system, collect payment, and schedule your fitment. However, the online method is faster and allows you to choose your preferred time slot in advance.

What Happens After Fitment?

Once your HSRP is fitted, the details are entered into the VAHAN database linked to your vehicle's registration. The plate comes with a non-removable snap lock that makes it impossible to transfer to another vehicle without breaking it — a key anti-theft and anti-fraud measure.

Pro Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Double-check your chassis and engine number before submitting — errors cause rejections.
  • Book an early morning slot at the fitment centre to avoid long queues.
  • Keep your booking confirmation number safe — you'll need it to track status or reschedule.
  • If your state portal is down, try again during off-peak hours or contact the helpline.
