Why Do HSRP Applications Fail?

Applying for an HSRP online should be straightforward, but many vehicle owners run into errors during the process. Most of these issues are caused by data mismatches, technical glitches, or misunderstandings about the process. This troubleshooting guide addresses the most frequently reported problems and explains how to resolve them.

Problem 1: "Details Not Found" or "Vehicle Not Registered" Error

Cause: This typically happens when the registration number, chassis number, or engine number entered doesn't match what's in the VAHAN database.

Fix:

  • Double-check your RC book carefully — chassis and engine numbers contain both letters and numbers that are easy to confuse (e.g., O vs 0, I vs 1).
  • Ensure you're selecting the correct state of registration.
  • If the details match your RC but the error persists, your vehicle's data may not yet be updated in VAHAN. Contact your local RTO to get the record corrected.

Problem 2: OTP Not Received

Cause: The mobile number registered in VAHAN for your vehicle differs from the one you're using, or there is a network delay.

Fix:

  • Wait 2–3 minutes before requesting a resend.
  • Check that the mobile number on your RC or in VAHAN records matches the one you're entering.
  • If your registered mobile number has changed, visit your RTO to update it in VAHAN before applying for HSRP.

Problem 3: Payment Deducted but No Booking Confirmation

Cause: This is usually a payment gateway timeout — money is deducted but the session expires before the booking is confirmed.

Fix:

  • Wait 24–48 hours; in most cases, the payment is automatically reversed.
  • Check your bank statement and the portal's "order status" section using your registration number.
  • Contact the portal's customer support helpline with your transaction ID and date of payment.
  • Do not make a second payment immediately — wait for the refund or confirmation first.

Problem 4: Fitment Centre Shows No Available Slots

Cause: High demand at popular centres, especially after enforcement drives.

Fix:

  • Try selecting a different fitment centre in a nearby locality.
  • Check back on the portal at different times — slots are released periodically.
  • Book well in advance of any announced state enforcement deadlines.

Problem 5: Plate Fitted but Details Are Wrong (Spelling Error, Wrong Number)

Cause: Data entry error during application or a manufacturing defect.

Fix:

  • Report the error to the fitment centre immediately at the time of fitting — they can initiate a replacement request.
  • If discovered later, contact the authorised vendor with your booking reference and a photo of the incorrect plate.
  • Do not drive with an incorrect plate — it may cause legal complications.

Problem 6: How to Reschedule or Cancel an HSRP Appointment

Most portals allow rescheduling through the same booking interface. Log in using your vehicle registration number or booking reference, navigate to "Manage Booking," and select a new date and centre. Cancellation and refund policies vary by vendor — check the terms on the portal before cancelling.

Problem 7: Snap Lock Broke During Fitment — What to Do?

If a snap lock breaks during or after fitment, return to the fitment centre as soon as possible. Authorised centres carry replacement snap locks and should be able to fix this at no extra charge if it is a manufacturing or fitment defect. Do not attempt to use a standard bolt as a replacement — this makes your plate non-HSRP-compliant.

When to Contact the RTO Directly

Contact your RTO if:

  • Your vehicle data in VAHAN is incorrect and causing persistent application failures.
  • Your registered mobile number is outdated and needs to be changed in records.
  • You've been fined for non-compliance despite having a valid booking confirmation.
